World Menstrual Hygiene Day which is observed annually on May 28th is a day set aside by the WHO with the key objective of raising awareness about menstrual Hygiene management and to break silence and negative norms associated with menstruation and menstrual health. This occasion is a global advocacy platform that brings attention to the importance of good menstrual hygiene management practices.
In follow-up of our week-long menstrual hygiene sensitization campaign with Revive Action Cameroon and Reachers Foundation, Volunteers from all three organizations assembled at Bakweri town community for a massive menstrual hygiene sensitization campaign.
The key objectives of the event were to:
Eliminate stigma and shame associated with menstruation, promoting an open dialogue about menstruation and menstrual health
To educate and empower girls and women about menstrual hygiene management and promote informed choices about their menstrual health.
This occasion which underscored the importance of proper hygiene management in the prevention of reproductive tract infection, promote good health and reduce the risk of diseases particularly in girls and women living in underprivileged communities.
During the course of the event, volunteers conducted an interactive and informative session on menstrual hygiene, which included discussions on the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene practices, proper usage of sanitary pads, and the overall significance of menstrual health. The sensitization campaign also featured open discussions and drama which encouraged participants to break the silence associated with menstruation and students were encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences related to menstrual hygiene. This interactive approach allowed the volunteers to address misconceptions and taboos surrounding menstruation, empowering the community to embrace their menstrual health with confidence.
The impact of the event was far-reaching as evidenced by the positive remarks of the community heads and participants on the timely intervention to provide them with vital knowledge regarding their menstrual health.
By addressing the challenges surrounding menstruation, YANA Inc., REVACAM and Reachers Foundation through such avenues aim to create a more equitable world where menstruation is no longer a barrier to health, education and gender equality.
